בן יחיד לרחל-לאה [לבית הרמן וגולדי פרידמן] ויעקב, נולד בשנת 1927 גר ברחוב מַיִיסָרוֹש 5 [ב 1938 שונו שמות הרחובות בקושיצה] בעיר קושיצה בצ'כוסלובקיה וקיבל חינוך יהודי וכללי. להוריו היתה חנות בגדים. בתקופת מלחמת-העולם השנייה, נלקח עם בני משפחתו מהגטו למחנה ההשמדה אושוויץ. הוריו נרצחו בתאי הגזים ב 5/6/1944, אך הוא נשאר בחיים. לאחר מפלת הגרמנים והשחרור מהמחנה הגיע למחנה עקורים בגרמניה ועבר שם אימונים במסגרת האצ"ל. שאיפתו היתה להגיע לארץ כדי להתאחד עם קרובי משפחתו שהקדימו לעלות ואשר עם ילדיהם שיחק בימי נערותו. הוא דחה אפשרות נוחה להגר לארצות-הברית. "מדוע אלך למקום שאינו ביתי אם ביכולתי ללכת למולדתי" - כתב אל קרוביו בארץ.
בגרמניה חיכה לתורו לעלייה וכשארכה לו השעה, השיג רישיון- נסיעה של חבר ונסע במקומו, כי בינתיים כבר החלה מלחמת- העצמאות והתלהבות עצומה אחזה בשארית הפליטה וליבתה את התקווה, אשר, כפי שהתבטא באחד ממכתביו, "לא מתה, מפני שגם בקרונות שהובילו יהודים לאושוויץ היתה שוררת תקווה".
הוא עלה ארצה בשנת 1948 והתגייס לחטיבת "גבעתי", עמה לחם באשדוד ובמרחב הדרום.
כשבוע לפני שנפל ביקר בבית קרובת משפחתו בת שבע ליבוביץ ברמת אביב בתל אביב
בליל 9-8 ביולי 1948 כבשו כוחות "גבעתי" את משלט עיבדיס מידי המצרים והתבססו בו.
דודתו חנה קליין מתגוררת [מאי 2005] ברחוב השומר בבני ברק

בימים הבאים ערכו המצרים התקפות חוזרות ונשנות על-מנת לשוב ולכבוש את המשלט, אך נהדפו בהגנה עיקשת.

אברהם נפל בהגנת עיבדיס ביום ג' בתמוז תש"ח (10.7.48).
הוא הובא למנוחת-עולמים בבית-העלמין הצבאי בבאר-טוביה.

They were no longer allowed to use public transportation, visit theaters, movies, coffee houses, or public spas. They had to record all their property with city authorities. There was a curfew for Jews from 7 PM to 6 AM. Their businesses and workshops were closed and confiscated and they were ordered to hand over their radio receivers.

בחזית הדרום לא תוכננו מבצעים התקפיים נרחבים. המצרים הקדימו ותקפו כבר ב-8 ביולי, יממה לפני תום ההפוגה, במגמה להרחיב את המערך שלהם בצומת הדרכים לנגב - "צומת גבעתי" (כיום) ולהשתלט על המרחב מנגבה צפונה.
בשלב הראשון נחלו המצרים הצלחה וכבשו מספר משלטים שהרחיבו את אחיזתם באזור "הצומת". ניסיוננו להשתלט על אזור הצומת לא עלה יפה לאחר שנכשלה ההתקפה על משטרת עיראק סוידאן, אך משלט עיבדיס נכבש מידי המצרים ועמד בהתקפות מצריות עזות .

...אברמלה אברמוביץ הטעין בינתיים כדורים לתוך שרשראות הבאזה, "אברמלה, אברמלה דו הערסט מיך? קראתי לעברו באידיש, אך לא שמעתי כל תשובה מהעבר ההוא כי בדיוק באותו רגע נפתחה אש; כדורי רובה, מקלעים, חלפו מעלינו בשריקות צורמות כלים כבדים וויקרסים אנגליים ירו מצריחי הטנקים, שטפו אותנו בצרורות
ללא הפוגה...

קרב עיבדיס

את הקרב בעיבדיס לא אשכח עד יומי האחרון, לא רק מפני שהיה זה, קרב קשה ביותר, אלא משום, שהצלחנו בכח קטן להביס שם את האויב המצרי, שעלה עלינו בכוחותיו המשוריינים והרגלים שבע מונים, מבלי להזכיר את גיחותיהם בגלים גלים של מטוסי הקרב המצריים, הספיטפירים שהמטירו עלינו שם אש תופת שוטפת ממכונת הירייה שבכנפיהם, והטילו עלינו מסות של פצצות.
...

היה זה גדוד חמישים ושלוש של החטיבה שקיבל אור ליום 8.7.48 את המשימה לכבוש את הגבעה, שניתן לה הכינוי "משלט עיבדיס", ולטהר אותה מהכח המצרי אשר נסוג והותיר אחריו שלל רב של תחמושת לרבות שני משוריינים ותותח שדה אחד. המצרים לא יכלו להשלים עם תבוסה מחפירה כזאת והחליטו לכבוש חזרה את המשלט.

בלילה שבין 8-9.7.48 עלינו שתי חוליות "באזה", מהפלוגה המסייעת לסייע למחלקה מגדוד 53, שהתבססה על המשלט. החוליה של רזיאל רוזנטל התמקמה באגף הצפוני של הגזרה מול הכפר עיבדיס, שבו התבסס הצבא המצרי, והמתינה להתקפותיו. החוליה השנייה המורכבת מאמנון לוסקי, מנחם הרמן ואנוכי, התמקמה באגף באגף הדרומי. ליד עמדת הבאזה וצמוד אליה, בשוחה קטנה ורדודה שכב העולה החדש אברהם אברמוביץ, שריד מהשואה שניצל ממנה בנס. הגיע אלינו הישר מן האוניה.

עם אור היום בתשיעי ביולי 1948, תקפו המצרים בגלים את המשלט מן האוויר ומן הקרקע. כיום ידוע לנו שתוכניתם של המצרים, היתה לעבות את הרצועה המנתקת את הנגב ממרכז הארץ, ובין היתר לכבוש לצורך תוכנית זו את קיבוץ נגבה. עיבדיס חלשה על הציר היחידי המוליך לנגבה, מצפון, והמחבר את הקיבוץ עם מרכז הארץ, השליטה עליה עלולה לגרום לניתוק הקיבוץ ממרכז הארץ.

כאמור, התקפות "הריכוך" המצריות בגלים גלים של מטוסי הספיטפייר כללו ירי אש תופת במכונות הירייה שבכנפיהם, ובפצצות שבביטנם, והם "חרשו" כל סנטימטר בגבעה הקטנה. הטייסים וקציני התצפית ניסו, במיוחד, לאתר, את קיני מכונות הירייה, את הבאזות, שהיוו לדידם את הסכנה הגדולה ביותר לחיל רגלי מסתער.

לרגע נשתתקו התותחים והמטוסים, דממה ירדה על המשלט, ענן עשן שחור כיסה את חזית המשלט. מסך עשן שהורידו עלינו המצרים כדי להתקדם בחסותו. מתוך הענן השחור עלה רחש של אנשים זוחלים. דרכתי את הסטן "סיסמא" צעקתי, "ימים קשים" היתה התשובה ומתוך העשן השחור ניצבץ ועלה יוסקה קוגל שהיה בחוליה של רזיאל רוזנטל. יוסקה דיווח לנו, כי "המטוס המצרי צלל בדיוק מעל העמדה (שלהם), כמעט נכנס לתוכה ופגע בנו בול אני עפתי החוצה, רזיאל נהרג והבאזה הלכה פייפן"

עכשיו נותרנו הבאזה היחידה, "הנשק הכבד" היחיד בכל הגזרה, להגנת המשלט הזה", אמרתי. הנוכל לעמוד "מול טנקים, תותחים, מטוסים, וכמאה רובאים חדורי שנאה שואפי דם ונקם, ומוטיבציה לכבוש את המשלט הזה בחזרה מידינו". "לא נכון" קטע אותי אמנון – יש גם פיאט אחד המסתתר בשוחה בדרום למשלט מהכוון הצפוי של נתיב הטנקים".

השעה היתה כבר סמוך לאחר הצהרים. יום קיצי לוהט. שמים כבשן. ושוב החלו צוללים מעלינו הספיטפירים וממטירים צרורות ופצצות, גם התותחים והמרגמות של המצרים התחילו לזמר ולחרוש את הגבעה "אנחנו מתקרבים לשעת ההסתערות, הם התחילו עכשיו שוב בריכוך" אמרתי.

"רגע" אמר אמנון "אתם יודעים שיש גם סוללת תותחים שם בצפון ליד סואפיר, הם הגיעו רק היום יחד עם מפקדה שהוא "דוקטור בן מאה אולי בשם פון וייזל".

אברמלה אברמוביץ הטעין בינתיים כדורים לתוך שרשראות הבאזה, "אברמלה, אברמלה דו הארסט מיך?" קראתי לעברו באידיש, אך לא שמעתי כל תשובה מהעבר ההוא כי בדיוק באותו רגע נפתחה אש; כדורי רובה, מקלעים, חלפו מעלינו בשריקות צורמות כלים כבדים וויקרסים אנגליים ירו מצריחי הטנקים, שטפו אותנו בצרורות בלא הפוגה, חורשים את אדמתו החולית של המשלט, מרימים ענני חול קטנים. פגזי מרגמות ותותחים ופצצות והתקפת מטוסים החרישו את האוזניים, המטוסים, הספיטפירים – בשלשות צוללים מעל המשלט יורקים את אישם מטילים פצצות מגחונותיהם ושבים על עקבותיהם כדי להתחמש מחדש. עוד אלה סבים על עקבותיהם וכבר מגיעה שלישיה אחרת, אין מנוח לרגע המשלט בסערת מלחמה מופצץ מופגז מורעש, ללא הרף, מן הקרקע ומן האוויר אנחנו מצטנפים בתוך הבונקר מקופלים כמו עוברים ברחם, "יה בייה, איזה התקפה" לוחש אמנון ושיניו נוקשות "הם כנראה מתכוונים להסתער עוד מעט".

בהפסקה קרא אמנון שוב לאברמוביץ, אך זה לא ענה. כשנפסקו הצליפות לזמן מה, אזרתי אומץ, והתרוממתי לאיטי, ואז פרצה זעקה מגרוני "הוא מת, חברה – אברמלה מת הוא נהרג!", צנחתי אל תוך העמדה. היו לו פני תינוק חבוק בזרועות אמו, אבל הוא היה מת. סך הכל בן שמונה עשרה או תשע עשרה, לחיים ורודות היו לו, ועור חלק, בהיר.

המתנו להתקפה, להסתערות טנקים ורגליים, והחלטנו לטווח את הבאזה מעל לגדר הקונצרטינה. עם הזריחה, החלו הטנקים שלהם להסתדר בטור חזיתי ליד גדר הכפר, והמון חיילים החלו צועדים מאחורי הטנקים עם רובים מכודנים שלופים קדימה. הטווח הוא כחמש מאות שש מאות מטרים, אני פותח באש, אל תוך מסך העשן שהחל לרדת עלינו. יריתי מאות כדורים ללא הפסקה. למזלנו השאירו המצרים כמה ארגזי תחמושת עם כדורים המתאימים לנו, כשברחו אתמול בלילה, אחרת לא היתה לנו תחמושת.

The city's industries include food processing, brewing and distilling, and the manufacture of machinery, cement, and ceramics. A petroleum refinery and a modern iron and steel center are in nearby Huko. Originally a fortress town, Košice was chartered in 1241 and became an important trade center during the Middle Ages. Holocaust victims' names still being collected

KOŠICE commemorated the deaths of almost 15,000 of its Jews in Nazi concentration camps by reading aloud the names of the eastern Slovak city's known Holocaust victims on May 19.
Of the 15,000 Košice Jews who were taken to their deaths at the end of the second world war in 1944, only around 300 survived the camps.
Because there were no lists of victims who were deported, an organisation called Hiding Child decided last year to compile one, managing to collect the names of 4,590 Jews who were sent to death camps from Košice.
Hiding Child was formed and is led by those who, being children at the time of the Jewish pogroms, managed to survive the Holocaust by going into hiding.
"We've worked for over a year to collect the information from all available sources around the world," said the organisation's Eva Backerová.
As part of the commemoration act, called Everyone Has A Name, the names of the individual victims were read out loud.
Backerová said that more names to complete the list were still arriving, and that her organisation was committed to making the tragic record complete.
"Those who did not survive don't have tombs or memorials bearing their names, and they could not have saved their lives. We therefore feel the obligation to at least save their names," said Backerová.
"Numbers are only numbers. But behind every one of them there is a concrete person who had a name, a life, and an identity," added Hiding Child's Miriam Gálová.

ביום 15.01.06 ערך בה"ד 1 תרגיל לאחד מגדודי חניכיו. לתרגול עקרונות תורת ההתקפה נבחר שטח מוצבי עיבדיס שממזרח לנגבה.
בסיכום התרגיל שותפו ותיקים מחטיבת גבעתי 1948 שלחמה באזור ושמשו כמפקדי היחידה שכבשה את מוצבי משלט זה. להלן חלק מדברי נחמן ניר שכיהן כקצין המבצעים של גדוד 53 וחודש אח"כ כמג"ד 53.

משלט עיבדיס הווה ציון דרך במלחמת העצמאות, תאור מהלך הלחימה בעיבדיס מחייב לסקור בקצרה את השתלשלות האירועים כפי שהתרחשו מאז פלישת הגיסות המצרים.
נתוני המודיעין שלנו היו מוגבלים למדי. לא היו בידנו מספיק נתונים על עוצמת הכוחות הפולשים ועל מגמות פעולותיהם. לימים התברר שכח הפלישה מנה 4 חטיבות סדירות בתוספת גדודי מילואים, יחידות הובלה, יחידות שריון, גונדות תותחים, יחידות הנדסה וכן כוח אווירי ניכר.

ב- 15.05 עם שחר חצו המצרים את הגבול ונעו במהירות צפונה. ציר החוף כולו מגבול מצריים ועד העיר יבנה עבר למעשה באזורים מאוכלסים בישובים ערביים פרט לשלושה מכשולים של ישובים עבריים: קבוץ נירים, כפר דרום וקיבוץ יד מרדכי אותם ניסו המצרים לסלק. התקפותיהם על נירים וכפר דרום נכשלו והם פסחו עליהם, בערבו של אותו יום הגיעו הכוחות המצריים לרפיח ולעזה שם שהו להתארגנות עד יום ה 19 ב 5. ביום זה התקדמו המצרים ותקפו את יד מרדכי שלוחמיה עמדו במערכה 4 יממות וביום 24.05 פינו את המשק ללא אבדות.

המצרים נפרשו עתה בשלושה צירים: כוח משני שנע מעוג'ה אל חפיר (ניצנה) לבאר שבע ועד לחברון. כוח משמעותי נפרש בציר מג'דל - בית גוברין והביא לניתוק הנגב מהדרום וכוח עיקרי המשיך צפונה לעבר תל אביב אך נעצר באשדוד לפני גשר הכביש על נחל לכיש אותו פוצצה יחידה קטנה מגדוד 53 כמה ימים לפני כן.

שלב זה של הלחימה, שהוגדר לימים כשלב הבלימה, השרה בתוכנו מצב רוח קשה שכן ספגנו לא מעט כישלונות.
יד מרדכי פונתה, ניצנים במערב וגזר במזרח לחמו נואשות אך נפלו בידי האויב.

גבעה 69 נכבשה, גבעה 113 נתפשה ע"י האויב, התקפת כוחותינו על אשדוד נכשלה, התקפותינו על משטרת עיראק סואידן נכשלו ואילו נגבה ספגה התקפה מצרית כבדה שהטילה הרס רב במשק אך נהדפה בגבורה.
בראשית חודש יוני כפה האו"ם על הכוחות הלוחמים לקיים הפוגה בקרבות. לקראת כניסת ההפוגה לתוקפה השלימו כוחותינו טהור מספר כפרים. בציר אשקלון באר טוביה היו בידינו הסאופירים, מחנה ג'וליס והכפר ג'וליס נכבשו על ידי כוחותינו.

במזרח נכבשו הכפרים ג'וסיר, יסור ותל אל צפי ובמערב הכפרים בית דראס, בטאני ע'רבי, יבנה, קוביבה וזרנוגה.
בשעות הבוקר של ה- 11ביוני נכנסה ההפוגה לתוקפה ונמשכה עד השביעי ביולי.
חטיבת גבעתי הכריזה על מבצע "אנ-פאר" (אנטי - פארוק) שפתח את קרבות עשרת הימים ונערכה לחדש את הלחימה בבוקר ה - 8 אלא שהמצרים הפתיעו אותנו ותקפו בלילה שבין ה- 7/8 את מוצב בית דראס בו החזיקה פלוגה שלנו. התקפתם נכשלה ובבוקר שלמחרתו נספרו בשטח עשרות חללים סודניים מהפלוגה התוקפת, נפל בידינו שלל של נשק ונשבה על ידנו המיג'ר ששימש כמפקד הכוח התוקף ואשר מהמסמכים שהיו עליו למדנו הרבה על מערך הכוח המצרי וחימושו.
בקיבוץ נגבה המבודדת הייתה מוצבת פלוגה מגדוד 53 שכונתה לימים "חולדות נגבה". כלקח מהתקפת המצרים על המשק ב 2/6 נהג הכוח להוציא מפעם לפעם סיורים לבדיקת השטחים שממזרח ומדרום לישוב. ביום שקדם להתקפה המצרית על בית דראס יצא מנגבה מ"מ עם יחידה של מחלקה מוגברת ונע לעבר הכפר עיבדיס שלעתים נראתה סביבו תנועה של תושבים מקומיים. במהלך התנועה לעבר הכפר נראה לאנשי הסיור כי השטח נקי מכוח כל שהוא אולם כששינו כיוון צפונה נפתחה עליהם לפתע אש עזה. משהתברר להם שהרכס נתפס על ידי המצרים מיהרו לסגת אך מאחר שהכיוון לנגבה היה חסום באש האויב נסוג הכוח לבסיס הגדוד בבאר טוביה, דווח למטה על ההיתקלות וחזר למחרת בבוקר לפלוגה בנגבה.
בשעות אחר הצהרים הגיע לנגבה נציג מטה הגדוד ובידו פקודה לפלוגה להערך ולצאת בלילה לתקוף את המצרים בעיבדיס וכן מסר כי בד בבד עם התקפת עיבדיס תתקוף יחידה אחרת של החטיבה את הכפר עיראק סואידן ויחידה מחטיבת הנגב את משטרת עיראק סואידן. שעת "ש" זהה נקבעה לשלושת הכוחות. ההתקפה על המשטרה נכשלה ועקב כך נסוג גם הכוח שכבש את הכפר, שעת ה "ש" נדחתה איפוא גם לתוקפי עיבדיס. באחור ניכר פרץ הכוח והסתער על רכס הגבעות, חלק מהמצרים נסוג ונמלט לעבר הכפר ואילו חלקם נאחז במחפורות ובתעלות. חולדות נגבה לחמו בתעוזה בקרב פנים אל פנים והצליחו להיאחז במשלט.
עם הנץ השחר נדהמו הבחורים לראות את היקף הציוד שהותירו המצרים למרגלות המוצב מספר רב של משאיות טעונת תחמושת, כמה נושאי ברן שריוניות, מכונית קשר משוכללת תותח שדה 25 ליטראות שני תותחים בני 6 ליטראות רובים אנטי טנקיים מספר טנדרים ארבעה אופנועים ועוד ועוד. אך בטרם התאוששו נתברר שנותרו עוד מצרים במחפורות ובין בתי הכפר שהתעקשו והמשיכו בלחימה. בעוד הבחורים עוסקים בהתכתשות הגיחו מטוסי אויב שהטילו פצצות וצלפו לעבר כל מה שנע באזור ותוך כדי כך נחתה עליהם הפגזת תותחים כבדה. מותשים המשיכו הבחורים בשארית כוחותיהם בלחימה וציפו לתגבורת.

אחר הצהרים הגיעה יחידה מגדוד 54 שהצטרפה להגנת המשלט ובשעות הערב אחרי לחימה רצופה משך 24 שעות שוחררו סוף סוף כובשי המשלט והוחלפו ע"י אנשי גדוד 54.

התקפות הנגד של המצרים נמשכו ביתר עוז למחרת הוחלפו אנשי 54 ביחידה מגדוד 52 שספג את המאמץ המרוכז ביותר של המצרים. למעלה משלוש יממות נמשכה עמידת הגבורה של לוחמי החטיבה בעיבדיס 27 מלוחמינו הקריבו נפשם על הסיסמה שרווחה בין הלוחמים "מעיבדיס אין נסיגה".
ביום השלישי ללחימה ביקרו במשלט ישראל גלילי שכיהן כסגן שר הביטו ויגאל ידין קצין המבצעים במטכ"ל. את התרשמותו הגדיר גלילי במשפט הבא: "השורות אצלכם מדולדלות אך הרוח ממלאה את הפרצים".

אשר יש לי לומר לחניכים המתאמנים כאן היום הוא כי אם כי עדיין עוטרים זרי תהילה ללוחמי תש"ח הרי אתם ללא ספק חיילים טובים מאתנו ובעצם אין לנו מה ללמדכם בתורת הלחימה ותחבולות הקרב.

IN THE MIDST of what the leaders of the world's Jewish community call a worrying increase in anti-semitism in Europe, 135 tombstones were desecrated in the eastern Slovak town of Košice April 21 by unknown vandals.

Slovakia's state representatives hurried to condemn the raid, which left half of the cemetery's tombstones commemorating local Holocaust victims lying broken on the ground. Košice officials said the act was the biggest attack on the town's Jewish community since the second world war, when about 13,000 Košice-area Jews were taken to Nazi death camps

The tragedy of the Kosice City Jews is tragedy of Slovakia and Hungary as well. Kosice City belonged to Hungary during WWII. Kosice City came under Hungarian control after the Vienna Arbitration on November 2, 1938. The Hungarian Army occupied the city on November 10, 1938.

During Census in occupied South Slovakian territory, there were 11,420 inhabitants of Jewish faith or ancestry in Kosice City. It was the largest population of Jews in occupied South Slovakia.

When the Germans took over Hungary on March 19, 1944, the pace for the extermination of the Jewish community from Kosice City was stepped up. Prime Minister Demeter Stojay of the Hungarian government decided about final liquidation of Jews already on March 29, 1944.

Starting on April 5, 1944 various restriction orders were issued. According to these orders Jews were obliged to wear yellow ”Star of David”, displayed visibly on their clothing. They were no longer allowed to use public transportation, visit theaters, movies, coffee houses, or public spas. They had to record all their property with city authorities. There was a curfew for Jews from 7 PM to 6 AM. Their businesses and workshops were closed and confiscated and they were ordered to hand over their radio receivers.

With presence of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior L. Endre, on April 24, 1944 a concentration camp was established in Kosice City brick factory. According to Kosice City Police District order dated April 24, 1944 Jews were assembled in today’s Puskin Street, Zvonarska Street, and Gresakova Street synagogues. From these they were escorted into the brick factory concentration camp. In two camps at the brick factory they crowded 10 590 Jews.

Other groups of the Jewish community were located in the city ghetto, the city prison, and in a few other places. On April 20, 1944 there were total 13,250 Jews in Kosice City. This number shows there were an additional 3000 Jewish persons, coming from places other than Kosice City.

The Jewish ghetto was a strictly isolated part of city suburb and it was place of residence for Jews with some temporary exclusion. At this time the ghetto consisted of the streets in the southeast of the city. Inside the ghetto streets, which were closed by fences, Jews could not loiter or assemble on the streets.

Similarly to the Jews from the brick factory, ghetto inhabitants had to work downtown and return immediately. During the return trip they were subjected to humiliating personal body searches. Jews who were in the ghetto believed they had a little more hope to survive because they had relatively more freedom and generally better hygienic conditions for life.

Deportation of Jews started on May 16, 1944. They were transported by railway freight cars. Railroad track leading directly into the brick factory allowed loading of freight cars in the brick factory. In four trainloads all concentrated Jews were sent to Oswiencim in Poland and the last trainload took place on June 4, 1944.

In the gas chambers of Oswiencim about 12 000 Kosice City Jews perished.

Once a sizable portion of the entire city population, only a fragment of the Jewish community returned to Kosice City after the war.

KOŠICE: US Commission No. SLCE000092 Kosice is located S of Presov. The urban, hillside cemetery, part of a municipal cemetery, has no sign, but has Jewish symbols on gate or wall. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all via a masonry wall and locking gate. 500-5000 marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and other materials 19th-20th century tombstones, all in original locations, are flat shaped stones, finely smoothed and inscribed stones, flat stones with carved relief decoration, or multi-stone monuments. Some have metal fences around graves. Inscriptions are Hebrew, German, Slovak, and Hungarian. There is a pre-burial house in the cemetery. The local Jewish community owns the property. Adjacent properties are other cemeteries. Frequently organized Jewish groups, tours, and private visitors visit. Re-erection of stones, cleaning stones, clearing vegetation, and fixing of wall is maintenance. There is a regular caretaker. No threats, but vegetation is a seasonal problem, preventing access. http://www.kosice.sk/history/zidovsky/jevish0.htm includes names. Kosice is a large city in eastern Slovakia, near the Ukranian and Hungarian borders. The Jewish cemetery is tiny and remote, hidden among trees. With 10-15 grave markers, the site is not fenced with no indication as to grave location. Juraj Czikk, a doctor in Košice (phone number 62 53836), showed us the site. The Neolog and Orthodox Jewish cemeteries adjoin the main Christian cemetery. One enters via the Christian cemetery's entrance, turning to left and walking to the far end of the Christian section where the Jewish Neolog cemetery's gate is located and kept open. Hours: correspond to Christian cemetery. (Mondays thru Fridays, 8 AM to 5 PM). At the entrance is a pre-burial house. Holocaust Memorial is not far from the entrance. The grave-keeper sometimes is at the premises can instruct visitors about finding graves. The cemetery is very large so finding graves is not easy. The plot is divided into two sections, the Neolog (largest) in the front and the Orthodox in the back. Walking the hilly site demands quite an effort. Well kept and clean even in winter, this active cemetery shows no signs of vandalism. The very large area surrounded by a brickwall must have over five thousand graves, some dating from the early 19th century. Graves are mostly marble and granite, some of sand and limestone. The holiday of Passover commemorates a time when the Jewish people were saved from the hands of the Egyptians some 3,500 years ago. But the Passover that took place in April 1944 led to a lesser-known miracle for one Jewish family in the town of Kosice.During World War II, in the Nazi-occupied countries, most Jews were unable to escape the Nazis' machinery of death and destruction. For those few Jews who did miraculously escape, the majority attribute it to chance, luck or divine intervention. Yet there are stories of rescue, perhaps only a very few, where logic, a pattern of action and consequence, is very much apparent.This is one of those rare stories.

Alexander, nee Edith Reif, lived with her parents and her older sister in a town called Kosice (Kaschau), Czechoslovakia. Kosice had a population of about 80,000 of which about 20,000 were Jewish. Her father was a merchant. After graduation from high school she went to work as an assistant for a dentist. Alexander states that she had many non-Jewish friends and she did not experience any anti-Semitism during her childhood.
